[ARCHIVED] Safely dispose of oil-based paints, pesticides and more: Household Hazardous Waste Collection Season

Household hazardous waste

Got old paint thinners, leftover pesticides or toxic cleaning supplies taking up space in your garage? Teton County’s Household Hazardous Waste collection season begins Wednesday, April 16. Appointments are now open for all 2025 collection dates through mid-October.

Collection takes place twice a month by appointment only at the HHW facility located behind the Recycling Center at 3270 S. Adams Canyon Road.

Last year, Teton County residents safely disposed of nearly 4,750 gallons of hazardous waste during the collection season, keeping harmful substances out of the landfill, waterways and ecosystem. That was an 18.7% increase over the previous year — proof that more residents are doing their part to protect the community and environment. Household Hazardous Waste includes materials that are toxic, corrosive, ignitable or reactive, like oil-based paints, solvents, pesticides and cleaning products that require special disposal methods.

“This is an easy chance to dispose of common household items that can be dangerous if handled improperly,” said Joe Chenault, Recycling Supervisor for Teton County Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling. “It’s a relatively quick process and helps keep our residents, county staff, trash haulers and wildlife safe.”

What You Can Bring

The HHW facility accepts a wide range of items, including:

    Oil-based paints and stains,

Automotive fluids like anti-freeze and dirty motor oil,

    Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers,

    Flammable solvents and turpentine,

Mercury thermometers, pool chemicals and toxic cleaning products,

    Fluorescent bulbs, aerosols and more.

Latex (water-based) paint is not accepted but can be dried with kitty litter and placed in the trash, with the empty cans recycled as scrap metal. The facility also cannot accept ammunition, explosives, asbestos, or containers larger than five gallons.

How It Works…

Appointments are required and can be made online at TetonCountyWy.gov/Recycle. Call (307) 733-7678 for specific materials questions or assistance with the scheduling app.

Collection days for 2025 are: April 16 and 30; May 7 and 21; June 4 and 18; July 2 and 19; August 6 and 20: September 3 and 17; and October 1 and 15.

To prepare for your appointment:

Bring materials in their original containers or clearly labeled.

Make sure lids are tightly sealed.

Turn off engine at the drop-off site.

Remain in your vehicle—staff will assist with unloading items.

No smoking or cell phone use at the facility.

Community Support Makes It Possible

HHW collection for Teton County residents is subsidized thanks to generous support from The Brinson Foundation, Teton Conservation District and Teton County Weed and Pest. These contributions help reduce costs for residents and local businesses. A schedule of fees is posted on the Teton County website.
